Customized Functional Foods, As told by Shani Jordan-Goldman, Registered Dietitian & Certified Diabetes Educator
Customized functional foods are the holy grail of healthy eating. Our diet is not always perfect. These help to get it a whole lot closer to perfect.
Buddy Nutrition has personal nutrition locked down. They set you up with a daily dose of everything your body needs to stay healthy and keep you going. Tailored to exactly what you, and only you, needs.
It’s a level up that will make you wonder how you ever did without it.
FUNCTIONAL FOODS…SO, WHAT ARE THEY EXACTLY?
Defining functional foods is a little tricky.
The closest thing to a formal definition we have is from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. The AND defines functional foods as: "whole foods along with fortified, enriched or enhanced foods that have a potentially beneficial effect on health when consumed as part of a varied diet on a regular basis at effective levels based on significant standards of evidence."
That’s a mouthful. But the whole picture is way less complicated than this sounds.
Foods that impart any health benefits are functional foods. This means ALL whole foods are functional. And that means eating a well-balanced diet is, in fact, eating a functional diet.
As a dietitian, I know this to be true.
One of the best things any of us can do for ourselves is to eat a well-balanced diet. Lots of fruits and vegetables. Lean proteins. Whole grains. Beans and nuts. All the basics we learned about in kindergarten. They’re still important.
Except this is SO hard to do.
Carefully considering the nutrient density of our vegetable intake in our gluten free diet is not something many of us have time to do.
We’re rushing to work with a cold Pop Tart in hand. We’re eating in the car and at our desks. We’re grabbing anything we can to get us through a 3-meeting power run.
Life is messy. Eating right is hard.
Our food choices are equally questionable. And the supplements we grabbed at the drug store are usually not much better.
We desperately need help with healthy. An easy and seamless way to optimize how we get good nutrition.
And we needed it yesterday.
YOU, ME AND EVERYONE ELSE
This isn’t news. We know we need help with our diets. It’s why there are tons of foods and beverages that double down on the nature-made original.
Orange juice that has added Vitamin D and calcium.
The free-range eggs with the daily dose of omega-3 fatty acids.
We know our everyday diet is missing many of these key nutrients. It's why we reach for these foods over and over.
But this is where the health benefits of the average functional food and beverage stops.
Their reach is generic. They don’t account for your individuality. They aren’t made for YOU.
You cannot customize the amount of calcium or vitamin D you want in your fortified orange juice.
You can’t request that your favorite brand of eggs ALSO start adding in vitamin C and immune boosting turmeric because you happen to be worried about flu season.
It’s why we take pills, tonics and elixirs. We’re hoping they’ll fill the gaps left by these generic functional foods.
We pick and choose varying combinations of micronutrients, proteins and antioxidants. We follow a paleo or macro or keto diets. We take the same vitamins and supplements as everyone else.
And we do these things without ever knowing if that's what we need to feel our best and stay our healthiest.
But what if there’s something better?
THE MAJOR FLAW IN YOUR MULTIVITAMIN
Multivitamins come one way: mass produced. And when there’s only one thing available, it will never be perfect for you.
This isn't about brands. It's about function.
Think about the number of supplements we take every day:
1. One for your activity and exercise (think: protein powder)
2. One for energy maintenance (think: double shot of espresso)
3. One because you don't eat enough fruits and vegetables (think: multivitamin)
4. One because you’re worried about cold season (think: vitamin C or echinacea)
When was the last time someone asked you about your lifestyle?
Or your preferences?
Or your daily food choices?
When was the last time someone asked you any of these things when recommending a supplement?
I’m guessing never.
And that’s a huge flaw in the industrialized nutritional supplement industry.
We listen to what other people are doing and assume it’ll work for us also.
But we are not the same as our friends. We live different lives than our neighbors. We have no idea what that YouTuber is really doing to look that way.
No wonder why we’re always scrambling to stay healthy. We’ve never used anything customized for us.
PERSONALIZING NUTRITION - CUSTOMIZING YOUR ONE-AND-DONE
It's time to stop guessing how to stay healthy.
Imagine the health benefits of a supplement made to your exact specifications.
What would it be like to get something with the nutrients you need, picked for you and only you?
When you customize a functional food or supplement, you don’t just fill in the holes left by yesterday’s food choices. You also account for your unique lifestyle.
More and more companies are starting to recognize how personal nutrition is. They’re also starting to realize why that matters. But not everyone is doing it well.
